DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Quilters Guild has a long history of making and donating quilts to organizations in San Francisco and the larger community. This tradition expanded in the last few years to include Curbside Outreach – an opportunity to drop off completed work or donations and pick up any or all components for your next project outside of the monthly guild meeting. \nManned by co-chairs Jessica and Adrienne\, it typically takes places on the first Saturday of the month\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, in front of Adrienne’s garage. You’ll find Adrienne’s address in the Membership Directory. There Is also a table at the in-person meetings the third Tuesday of the month. Details here.

SUMMARY:Zoom Workshop - Reverse Applique with Celeste Compion
DESCRIPTION:Learn needle turn reverse appliqué using your choice of modern or traditional patterns\, with a view to attempting more complex patterns like those in “Dutch Treat” by Judy Garden\, the inspiration for this class\, and which Celeste has made as seen below. \n \nThe workshop is suitable for all levels\, including beginners\, and will take place on Zoom from the comfort of your own home. \nTHE ZOOM LINK WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU ONE WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT. \nYour teacher\, Celeste Compion\, was born in South Africa into a family of creative makers\, stitchers and knitters. In 2001 she moved to Canada with her family\, and founded Meerkat Shweshwe – an online and in-person business where you can learn about and buy the traditional South African shweshwe fabric. She recently retired the store side of business but continues to enthusiastically teach and lecture around the world. \nEVERY ATTENDEE will need to additionally buy a $15 (Canadian dollars – roughly USD $11) pattern from Celeste – details are provided in the confirmation email. However\, she also has a free gift for you – a free thread catcher pattern! \nTicket Pricing \nThis is our first workshop to introduce equity pricing – intended to allow all members\, including those on the tightest budgets\, to benefit from the Guild’s Workshop Program. (Only you and the Organizers will know which ticket type you have bought). \nStandard: This is the base price for the workshop. If you don’t have any financial hardship\, we encourage you to support the workshop with this price. (e.g. you can go to a fabric shop on a whim and buy a few yards without needing to check your bank balance\, but might have to save for a new machine) \nEquity: Consider paying this amount if the Standard price of the workshop would create a financial burden. (e.g. you need to pause and check your budget before buying a fat quarter of fabric.) \nPay It Forward: Consider paying this amount if you are able to contribute to ensuring that all those who want to attend our events can. (e.g. you are able to buy new fabrics and tools as you wish without needing to check your budget) \nMembers can sign up here. The member cost is $19-$59. \nNon-members will be able to buy any remaining tickets from October 27th. Non-Member tickets will be sold at the Pay-It-Forward price $59\, although we do encourage you to sign up for membership! Open up your wallets for nifty tools and fabrics to add to your stash. Our cash-and-carry tables will be stocked with great items\, and many of our affiliates have donated wonderful fabrics and kits for our basket raffle. \nCash and checks preferred\, credit cards accepted. \nProceeds support all that we do and receive. \nPlease direct questions to TBD. \nThe event also features refreshments. SUMMARY:Modern Quilting Workshop with Claudia John Shearer - Postmodern Jukebox
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to construct a dynamic curved block using my ruler- and template-free technique and design your own Postmodern Jukebox quilt. This workshop is perfect for quilters who are new to improvisation or anyone looking for a structured\, yet creatively open\, way to dive into freeform design. \nWe’ll explore a concept I call flexible patterning—you determine the number\, size\, and layout of your blocks\, working loosely within a g rid to create rhythm and movement. This process allows for spontaneity while maintaining a cohesive structure. I will provide a tutorial on cutting and piecing curves without rulers or templates\, plus tips on fabric selection to help you build a vibrant and personal color palette. \nThere are no specific fabric requirements\, as this is an improvisational process. Bring a variety of fabrics—no less than a quarter yard (WOF) per piece. The sample quilt pictured here used approximately 2 yards of fabric. If you pre-select your color palette\, bring extra fabric so you have options to design in the moment. \nIn addition attendees will need to bring the following: \n\nBasic quilting supplies (thread\, scissors\, rulers\, etc.)\nRotary cutter (with a new\, sharp blade) & cutting mat\nPins and a fabric marker\, such as a Sewline chalk pencil\nPortable design wall. You can make a simple one economically by affixing a piece of batting to a small foam board or bring some batting or flannel and painters tape to improvise a design wall in class.\nSewing machine\n\nMembers can sign up here. Member class fee is $100. \nNon-member sign-up open September 28. Inner borders\, outer borders\, and binding all provide opportunity to add a little to the finish product. For this lecture 40-50 quilts will demonstrate the options you have as the quilt maker/ artist. Along with decision possibilities we will discuss how to make it “fit” \nFind out more about Linda on her website. \nAbout Linda Wagner: \nLinda Wagner has been making quilts for over 35 years and teaching quilting for over 25 years and her personal interests gravitate to scrappy quilts. Presently Linda is a lead mechanic with United Airlines. Previously she taught electronics. Linda is a N.A.T.S. certified teacher. \nOwning her first sewing machine while in third grade\, Linda began making doll clothes\, moved on to making clothes for herself and other family members randomly altering pattern designs. While in college she earned a dress maker’s ceritification from Santa Anna College. Linda’s first quilt was made using Eleanor Burns techniques that included ripping strips (this was before the rotary cutter was invented). Things took off at warp speed after joining a quilt guild. Linda’s favorite part of guild was show and tell. Needing to try a lot of what she saw soon earned her the nick name addquilter. Many of Linda’s quilts contain 100-400 fabrics. DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Quilters Guild has a long history of making and donating quilts to organizations in San Francisco and the larger community. This tradition expanded in the last few years to include Curbside Outreach – an opportunity to drop off completed work or donations and pick up any or all components for your next project outside of the monthly guild meeting. \nManned by co-chairs Jessica and Adrienne\, it typically takes places on the first Saturday of the month\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, in front of Adrienne’s garage. You’ll find Adrienne’s address in the Membership Directory. There Is also a table at the in-person meetings the third Tuesday of the month. Details here.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Pattie Klimek: Crazy Quilts Through the Ages. \n\n\n\nCRAZY QUILTS. Judith Baker Montano\, the queen of the modern crazy quilt\, says that a crazy quilt is a quilt that is tied\, not quilted\, and the seams are always embroidered. But of course it is more than that. A crazy quilt is also a snapshot of history. If you look at antique crazy quilts\, you will see embroidered pictures that reflect important events of the past. What symbols reflect modern history? How are the crazy quilt techniques used by the quilters of today? Look at crazy quilts through the eyes of contemporary quilters and see how they use their own personal stamp and leave a bit of history behind for the quilters of tomorrow. \nAbout Pattie Klimek: \n\n\nPattie has been quilting for 15 or so years. Based in San Francisco\, she is the one of the few Traditional hand piecers and hand quilters in a sea of Art and Contemporary quilters located in the Bay Area. She found some like minded quilters amongst the Dorcas Hand Quilters\, a group that meets once a week to hand quilt in San Francisco. She blesses these ladies everyday for teaching her these time honored skills and is now traveling around the Bay Area teaching so quilters can rediscover the joys of handwork.
