SUMMARY:Material Matrix with Sandra Bruce
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Sandra Bruce: Material Matrix. \n\n\n\nSandra Bruce brings us her “Material Matrix” lecture on May 21\, 2024. Her technique was inspired by painter Chuck Close. It involves using a gridded photograph and interpreting each 2-inch square into fabric\, using piecing to achieve the effect. She will present an overview of the evolution of Material Matrix and how it works\, along with her colorful visual journey that brought her to this technique. \nFor more information visit Sandra’s lecture page here. \nAbout Sandra Bruce: \nSandra Bruce was born in Richmond\, VA to deaf parents. Raised to believe she could do anything she put her mind to\, she was never discouraged from being an artist. Sandra started sewing at age 8 on her mother’s treadle sewing machine and she has not stopped since. She took her first official quilting class in 1990 and she has been forever hooked. \nSandra has been an illustrator and letterer for 35 years and started her quilting business in 2010. She feels that quilting on her long-arm\, named Dixie\, is doing what she’s done all those years but with a different tool. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Sarah Goer: Rules and Options of Planned Improv Piecing. \n\n\n\nSarah likes options… but she also likes a plan. In this lecture and trunk show\, Sarah will discuss how she uses her organized nature to develop rules for herself which drive her Planned Improv quilt design work. She will share work in a series and show how she iterates on a design. Sarah will explain how she develops a formula for her project. She will leave us with specific ideas of how to develop a set of rules to guide our improv piecing. \nAbout Sarah Goer: \nSarah Goer is an artist and educator. Based in San Jose\, California\, she learned to sew as a child and was drawn to the color and geometry of quilting after college. As a former middle school math teacher\, Sarah combines her eleven years of classroom experience with her nearly two decades of quilting experience to bring clear instruction to her quilt students. SUMMARY:Feedsacks with Dr Marian Ann J. Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Dr Marian Ann J. Montgomery: Feedsacks. \n\n\n\nWhat We Have Learned: Feed Sacks have been an integral part of American quilting since the late 19th century when frugal women bleached the white cotton sacks to use as quilt backings.  In the late 1930s feed came in sacks with beautiful prints on them.  This presentation will showcase beautiful quilts made from feed sack fabrics as well as the myriad items made from feed sacks along with the history of this commodity.  New research based on the largest collection of printed cotton sacks held in a public repository\, Dr. Montgomery will share what they have found as well as many of the beautiful treasures in the collection. \nAbout Marian Ann J. Montgomery\, Ph.D.: \nCurator of Clothing and Textiles at the Museum of Texas Tech University since 2014\, Marian Ann J. Montgomery\, Ph.D.\, cares for over 35\,000 objects\, the largest collection of this type of material at a University in the United States. She is a quilt historian having published through the American Quilt Study Group. Sought out as an entertaining and informative speaker\, Dr. Montgomery enjoys making history come alive through the objects. \nShe received the 2019 Bybee Scholar award for her work in promoting and preserving the art of quilting. Among others\, her publications include Cotton and Thrift: Feed Sacks and the Fabric of American Households\, Sumptuous Stitches and Tiny Treasures: Needlework and Needlework Tools in the Collection of the Museum of Texas Tech University\, and Miss America Fashion. Dr. Montgomery earned her Ph.D. in fashion and textile history/museum administration from New York University through studies in the Costume Institute and Textile Study Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She resides in Lubbock with her husband and dog where she quilts in her spare time. \n\n\nThis will be a hybrid meeting: in-person at St Anne’s and broadcast via Zoom\, link available on the Members Only Page.\nNonmembers may pay a $5 guest fee at the door or get a ticket for zoom coming soon.

Zoom meeting will be left open for one hour afterwards for members to share. \nMini-workshops details: like Make-and-Take but less about taking a finished project home with you\, you can learn about and try your hand at the following techniques taught by our own members. \nMichelle Trimble\nLearn to machine sew small curves with a minimum of fuss! \nJudy Epstein-Williams\nPerfect Tumbling Blocks: Judy’s Version. A combination of hand piecing and EPP. \nClaudia Shearer\nCreating Color Stories \nPattie Klimek\nHow to Debone a Shirt in 5 Minutes demo. \nDid you clean out your closets recently? Take all those worn shirts and recycle them. This demo will show you a quick way to “debone” a shirt and “harvest” the fabric use using your rotary cutter. SUMMARY:My Animal Quilts with Nancy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Nancy Brown: My Animal Quilts. \n\n\n\nNancy has been making applique quilts for over 30 years featuring a variety of animals from anteaters to zebras (with a lot of dogs and cats in between). Nancy also has made several people themed quilts mostly based on old family photos. This lecture is a retrospective of her quilts and the stories behind them (with an emphasis on the more recent quilts). She will also talk a little about her design process. \nAbout Nancy Brown: \nNancy started making quilts over 30 ago after her mother took a quilting class and taught her what she had learned. Nancy has always loved animals and found that by using applique she could create realistic animal portraits. She feels that animals are important parts of this world and should be celebrated and preserved. She has made many animal quilts but with the wide variety of subjects available she feels there are many more animal quilts waiting to be made. \nNancy also loves old family photographs and from time to time she has made quilts inspired by these photos as a way to celebrate family. \nNancy exhibits her quilts around the country and has been fortunate enough to win some awards at these shows. Her quilts are in several private collections. She also teaches hand applique classes with animal themes and lectures on her animal quilts. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Marjan Kluepfel: Evolution of an Art Quilter and Fabric Dyer. \n\n\n\nIn this fast moving\, information packed lecture Marjan discusses her personal methods for finding inspiration and creating designs. Her sewing and quilting techniques will be included. The lecture focuses on her development and growth as a practicing artist. Spanning almost thirty years\, her works have included intensive use of fiber reactive dyes and textile paints\, and many innovative art techniques. All will be discussed and revealed in this lecture. For more information about Marjan’s work\, please see her website. \nAbout Marjan Kluepfel: \nMarjan Kluepfel was born in the Netherlands. She has lived in Florida\, Hawaii\, Australia and South Carolina. After working in academia for many years\, she is now a full-time studio artist in Davis\, CA. Marjan has been creating art quilts since 1990. Her work has been juried into many shows and she teaches her fabric art both nationally and internationally. Marjan’s work is for sale at the Artery in Davis\, CA\, and High Hand Gallery in Loomis\, CA. Information about donating items can be found in the newsletter and Members Only Page. \nDig through your closets\, attics\, basements and sewing rooms for quilt-related items in good condition. Open up your wallets for nifty tools and fabrics to add to your stash. Our cash-and-carry tables will be stocked with great items\, and many of our affiliates have donated wonderful fabrics and kits for our basket raffle. \nCash and checks preferred\, credit cards accepted. \nProceeds support all that we do and receive. \nPlease direct questions to Stephanie Egger; her contact info is in the Membership Directory. \nThe event also features refreshments.
