DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Quilters Guild has a long history of making and donating quilts to organizations in San Francisco and the larger community. This tradition expanded in the last few years to include Curbside Outreach – an opportunity to drop off completed work or donations and pick up any or all components for your next project outside of the monthly guild meeting. \nManned by co-chairs Jessica and Adrienne\, it typically takes places on the first Saturday of the month\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, in front of Adrienne’s garage. SUMMARY:Kawandi & Siddi Quilting One Day Workshop with Judith Epstein
DESCRIPTION:This method of Kawandi (Indian quilt) is distinctive to the Siddi people of Karnataka\, India. In the workshop you will learn a few simple guidelines to get you started using this fun and rewarding improvisational technique. There will be a variety of fun fabrics provided\, but students are encouraged to bring their own larger fabric scraps to use and share. This is a HAND sewing workshop\, so no need to bring a machine. Also we are limited to just 12 attendees so don’t hesitate to book as this will sell out! \nA Kit (usually $20) is included in your ticket price. The Kit will be waiting for you at the venue and contains: \n\nA selection of fun fabrics to choose from\nBacking fabric to choose from\, or bring your own loosely woven piece\, 18”x12”.\nJudy’s favorite needle\nNeedle puller\nHandout\n\nIn addition attendees will need to bring the following: \n\nFabrics: Light weight and/or loose-weave fabric selection that includes a variety of prints\, solids\, stripes\, etc.*. If you choose to use your own fabric for backing\, it needs to be one 18×12”piece. Scraps need to be at least 4” x 6”.\nBatting: For Siddi Quilts\, a middle layer is optional. If you choose to use it you need one piece of 11×17 light -weight batting or light inner layer fabric like double gauze or flannel (stay away from inner layer fabrics that could distract as you work or show through).\nThread: Thinner Sashiko thread or #12 perle cotton (Wonderful Spaghetti is ideal). White is traditional\, but any color will do.\nSewing Pins\nTravel Iron and pad if you have one (we will have the Guild’s irons and ironing boards as well)\nSharp fabric shears\nThimble\nSnips\nBasting thread\nMat & Rotary cutter\n\n* Try not to bring only prints\, as an even distribution of prints and solids is ideal. Scraps need to be at least 4” x 6”. As for bringing only loosely woven fabrics\, I cannot emphasize this enough. At times you will be sewing through as many as 12 layers\, so to spare your fingers\, no densely woven fabrics\, please! \nMembers can sign up here. Member class fee is $100. \nNon-member sign-up open May 26. SUMMARY:Seminole Patchwork with Kristin Echols
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Kristin Echols: Seminole Patchwork \n\n\n\nLearn the history of the Seminole Indians and how their unique approach to patchwork became a vital source of income for the tribes. See examples of their patchwork over the decades in clothing and crafts and learn about the significance of the designs in their culture. Modern examples of Seminole quilts will also show the versatility of these beautiful designs. \nFind out more about Kristin on her website. \nAbout Kristin Echols: \nKristin began quilting in 1999 when she made a baby quilt for her best friend. She made the quilt using the fabric from the bridesmaid’s dress she wore in the wedding. Acetate is not the best fabric choice for a baby quilt\, but Kristin got the quilting bug. She took classes\, bought a Janome\, got to know the ladies at her local quilt shop\, and decided to pursue quilting as a hobby. It was a colorful and creative outlet to balance with her career as a computer engineer. \nKristin became intrigued by Seminole patchwork after seeing the technique on Simply Quilts. She found all the books she could on the subject and started incorporating Seminole strip piecing into her quilts and home dec projects. She has been teaching the techniques for over 15 years and she teaches an annual 12-week Seminole Sampler class where students learn to piece 10 Seminole bands and create a unique quilt layout using quilt-as-you-go techniques. \nKristin retired from the County of Sacramento where she spent 23 years as a computer geek. When not quilting or teaching\, she enjoys spending time with her husband Shawn\, their three grown children and two grandkids. They live on 18 acres in beautiful Worley\, Idaho where they enjoy gardening and raising chickens. \n\n\nThis will be a hybrid meeting: in-person at St Anne’s and broadcast via Zoom\, link available on the Members Only Page.\nNonmembers may pay a $5 guest fee at the door or get a ticket for zoom coming soon.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Scarlett Rose: Quirky Quiltmaking-Upcycle it! \n\n\n\nGet into upcycling\, recycling and reusing fabrics/garments/found items for traditional\, contemporary and art quilts \nFind out more about Scarlett on her website\, @scarlettrosedesigner on Instagram\, and FaceBook. \nAbout Scarlett Rose: \nScarlett Rose started quilting in 1976\, teaching in 1986 and quilt judging in the 1990s. Scarlett teaches and lectures for quilt guilds\, shops and conferences throughout the United States and has taught twice in Japan.\nScarlett is a Northstate board member of the California Heritage Quilt Project. She is active in documenting quilts on the Quilt Index.\nWhile specializing in Celtic designs for all kinds of appliqué\, embroidery\, Sashiko\, color markering and crayoning\, Scarlett also designs scrap quilts\, friendship quilts and foundation pieced quilts that are Modern innovations on classic patchwork patterns. She enjoys interpreting traditional symbols common to her multicultural heritage.\nScarlett combines her Japanese and Ainu (indigenous Japanese) influences with her Celtic work. Besides her contemporary appliqué and patchwork quilts\, Scarlett has also designed unique Wearable Art pieces and Art Quilts. This tradition expanded in the last few years to include Curbside Outreach – an opportunity to drop off completed work or donations and pick up any or all components for your next project outside of the monthly guild meeting. \nManned by co-chairs Jessica and Adrienne\, it typically takes places on the first Saturday of the month\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, in front of Adrienne’s garage. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Kim Brownell : Challenges: What to do \n\n\n\nYou are calmly sitting in your quilt group enjoying life. Then you hear ” The challenge for this year is….”. Does panic set in? Do you want to participate\, but not sure what to do next? Learn good ideas on how to approach challenges\, where to find them\, and why everyone should participate in them. \nAbout Kim Brownell: \n\n\nShe calls herself “The Wacky Doodle Quilter” due to her easy-going whimsical style. In quilting she doesn’t always follow the rules and tends to ignore the “quilting police”. \nHer work gravitates towards animals\, nature scenes\, and bright colors. Her techniques include and blend: fabric collage\, free form art quilts\, raw-edge applique\, as well as many others. She has a passion for entering quilt challenges. These spark her imagination and inspire her. \nShe has been quilting since 1993 and has received many recognitions and awards in various shows and the California State Fair. She was chosen as the Featured Artist at the River City Quilters’ Guild Show in 2018 “Window of Imagination” due to her creativity as a quilter. \nPlease check out her website www.thewackydoodlequilter.com.
