SUMMARY:e bond's Mono Printing Using Gelli Plates
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned artist e bond at this workshop for artists of all genres. We’ll be using gelli plates and paints (provided) to make marks initially on paper before moving to fabric. e will guide us through the steps to make unique and experimental pieces that reflect your own personality and preferences. Everyone will come away with their own collection of fabric and paper\, ready to be turned into whatever you desire. \nThe venue is the rear classroom at St Anne’s. There is ample parking at the rear of the church on the basketball courts. \nSupply List \n– Paper to get warmed up with will be provided\, but if you wish to do the whole class on paper you should bring additional in the weights you desire. \n– Those wishing to print on fabric should bring cotton\, with some precut 8″x10″ pieces to start with (the size of the gelli plate). You can then choose whether to continue with the precut size or print on yardage. Cotton can be any color/print and should be pre-washed where possible\, although this is not essential. It is hard to estimate how much you will need but thirty 8×10 pieces is not outlandish (printing roughly ten per hour)\, and if you work quickly you may wish to bring more. (We suggest that you bring a few yards more than you think you’ll need and cut them at the class as desired.) \n– You may want to bring baking parchment or freezer paper to transport still tacky prints home without them sticking to each other (optional) \n– You are welcome to bring any textured or shaped items you may wish to use during the printing process\, such as bubble wrap\, fake flowers and leaves\, stamps etc. Plenty of options will also be provided. \n– Bring a water bottle and snacks \nThe Teacher \ne bond is a designer + artist + writer + bookbinder & educator. Currently\, she teaches art workshops & creates fabric collections by day\, makes handmade books by night\, hangs out with trees on weekends and writes something close to poems in the spaces between. Under the studio name roughdrAftbooks\, she makes one-of-a-kind artists books\, printed pieces and abstract drawings that merge and blur the boundaries of art\, craft\, surface design and poetry. e holds a BFA in Graphic Design and Art History from Moore College of Art & Design and an MFA in Creative Writing and Book Art from Mills College. She has spent years as a professor of Graphic Design and Book Art in various college and university art departments\, and her work is held in library collections across the US. e’s work has been published in Pressing Matters Magazine\, Uppercase Magazine\, Berkeley Poetry Review\, 500 Handmade Books\, as well as numerous books (about books). Most recently\, her work has moved into the wonderful world of surface design where she designs colorful\, abstract fabric collections in collaboration with Free Spirit Fabrics. You can learn more at ebondwork.com or on Instagram as @eisroughdraft. \nTickets \nBuy tickets here. \nTickets are open to members of the SF Quilters Guild ONLY until May 20th. Any remaining tickets after this date will go on general sale. Think about joining today! \nSFQG operates an equity ticket program to help those members facing financial difficulty be able to attend events. No one will know if you buy an equity ticket other than the Workshop Chair. Details about the program can be found here. \nCancellation\, Refund and other policies are here. \nFAQs\n \nDo I need to be a quilter to attend? No\, definitely not. We will start with paper prints before maoving to fabric\, but you can just use paper\, or use the fabric for anything at all. \nCan I bring clothing to print on? You can bring anything you like\, within reason\, but we are only using materials suitable for printing on cotton.

SUMMARY:Stories in Cloth with Deb Cashatt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Deb Cashatt : Stories in Cloth \n\n\n\nDescription: coming soon. \nFind out more about Deb on her website. \nAbout Deb Cashatt: \n\n\nDeb Cashatt is a full-time studio artist whose primary medium is the art quilt. During the Coronavirus shutdown\, she began creating pieced quilts based on wonky graphic symbols. The rectilinear Greek key—long one of her favorite patterns—became a key element in this work. As she combined Greek keys with other pieced blocks on her design wall\, recognizable objects began to emerge. Blending the words “graphic” and “symbol\,” she coined the term “symbographic.” These symbographs have become a visual language through which she tells stories in cloth.\nAlthough based in the Gold Country of Northern California\, Cashatt is an enthusiastic traveler. She jokes that she is fortunate to have friends who move to exotic places just so she can visit them. Memories from her travels\, along with objects from everyday life\, frequently appear in her artwork.\nIn addition to her solo practice\, Cashatt spent 20 years as one half of the fiber art duo Pixeladies. Both the Pixeladies’ work and her solo artwork have been published and juried into national and international exhibitions. You can see Deb’s work on her website. She posts  work in progress on Instagram.  Deb thinks the world would be a better place if people wore boas and drove colorful cars with fins. \nThis will be a hybrid meeting: in-person at St Anne’s and broadcast via Zoom\, link available on the Members Only Page.\nNonmembers may pay a $5 guest fee at the door or email contact@sfquiltersguild.org to purchase a non-member zoom link.

SUMMARY:Finishing & Binding with Lorraine Woodruff-Long
DESCRIPTION:Join renowned artist and teacher Lorraine Woodruff-Long as she helps us get ready for the SFQG Show\, 2-3 April 2027\, with a class on finishing and binding. Lorraine will take us through multiple techniques to ensure your quilts are finished to a high standard. \nGet ready for your next quilt show! Binding is often a quilters least favorite part of quilting. Never fear – it’s possible to love the process and your result! In this workshop I’ll show you: \n\nHow to create\, attached and sew-down well-constructed double-fold binding to protect the edges of bed and larger quilts.\nHow to face a quilt (not visible from the front) for floating wall and art quilts.\nWhen to use and how to create bias-binding.\nHow to easily make a hanging sleeve to ensure your quilt hangs easily and falls straight cleanly when mounted to a wall or frame.\n\nThe venue is the rear classroom at St Anne’s. There is ample parking at the rear of the church on the basketball courts. \nSupply List \n\nStudents must provide and know the basics of their own working sewing machine\nFabric (I’ll teach all three of these)\n\nFor on-grain binding: ½” yard\nFor bias binding technique: ½” yard\nFor sleeve: Fabric or sheet that is at least 9” x (width of your quilt) Or bring a sheet as a\nsample to learn.\nNote: I’ll provide quilted samples that you can use to attach binding to learn to bind and\nface a quilt\, or you can bring your own quilt to bind. But bring fabric for binding and a\nsleeve.\n\n\nThread for machine\nSharp fabric scissors/shears\n45” or 60” Rotary cutter\n3”x18” acrylic ruler (or other favorite size that is long-ish)\nPortable cutting mat\nSewing pins/pincushion or magnetic pin catcher\nSewing pins & needles\nGlue stick or Elmers glue\nToilet paper or paper towel rolls to roll up your binding\nBring a water bottle and snacks\n\nThe Teacher \nLorraine Woodruff-Long is a San Francisco quilter with a primary focus on color\, improvisation\, and recycled/repurposed fabrics\, who is passionate about creating quilts as political and social commentary. She is familiar under her quilting name @quiltinginthefog. \nRaised in Houston\, and educated at University of Texas/Austin\, Lorraine served in Peace Corps Kenya and afterwards moved to California as a “bucket list” dream to temporarily experience living in a progressive urban city. She fell in love with San Francisco and never left. After a career in marketing and advertising\, Lorraine later worked in the nonprofit sector while raising two city kids with her architect husband before spring boarding into a fiber art practice prompted by the pandemic. \nLorraine’s work has been juried into art exhibitions at the de Young Museum/San Francisco\, the California Heritage Museum/Santa Monica\, Slate Contemporary Art Offsite Exhibitions\, the Sanchez Art Center/Pacifica\, Muzeo Museum & Cultural Center/Anaheim\, TAG Gallery/Los Angeles the Drawing Room/San Francisco\, and the Bedford Gallery-Lesher Center for the Arts/Walnut Creek. She has received numerous awards for her quilts at local\, national and international quilt shows. Quilt exhibitions include the International Quilt Festival/Houston\, QuiltCon\, Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA)\, and Quilt San Francisco among others. \nTickets \nBuy tickets here. \nTickets are open to members of the SF Quilters Guild ONLY until July 31st.
