In quilting she doesn’t always follow the rules and tends to ignore the “quilting police”. \nHer work gravitates towards animals\, nature scenes\, and bright colors. Her techniques include and blend: fabric collage\, free form art quilts\, raw-edge applique\, as well as many others. She has a passion for entering quilt challenges. These spark her imagination and inspire her. \nShe has been quilting since 1993 and has received many recognitions and awards in various shows and the California State Fair. She is active in documenting quilts on the Quilt Index.\nWhile specializing in Celtic designs for all kinds of appliqué\, embroidery\, Sashiko\, color markering and crayoning\, Scarlett also designs scrap quilts\, friendship quilts and foundation pieced quilts that are Modern innovations on classic patchwork patterns. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Kristin Echols: Seminole Patchwork \n\n\n\nLearn the history of the Seminole Indians and how their unique approach to patchwork became a vital source of income for the tribes. See examples of their patchwork over the decades in clothing and crafts and learn about the significance of the designs in their culture. Modern examples of Seminole quilts will also show the versatility of these beautiful designs. \nFind out more about Kristin on her website. \nAbout Kristin Echols: \nKristin began quilting in 1999 when she made a baby quilt for her best friend. She made the quilt using the fabric from the bridesmaid’s dress she wore in the wedding. Acetate is not the best fabric choice for a baby quilt\, but Kristin got the quilting bug. She took classes\, bought a Janome\, got to know the ladies at her local quilt shop\, and decided to pursue quilting as a hobby. It was a colorful and creative outlet to balance with her career as a computer engineer. \nKristin became intrigued by Seminole patchwork after seeing the technique on Simply Quilts. She found all the books she could on the subject and started incorporating Seminole strip piecing into her quilts and home dec projects. She has been teaching the techniques for over 15 years and she teaches an annual 12-week Seminole Sampler class where students learn to piece 10 Seminole bands and create a unique quilt layout using quilt-as-you-go techniques. \nKristin retired from the County of Sacramento where she spent 23 years as a computer geek. When not quilting or teaching\, she enjoys spending time with her husband Shawn\, their three grown children and two grandkids. DESCRIPTION:Join us for conversations with Ribbon Winners from Quilt 2025. \nAfterglow is a new event\, inspired by our friends at the Guild of Quilters of Contra Costa County\, that will allow us to learn from our very own talented quilt show ribbon winners. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Margaret Fabrizio: Playing with Textiles Without Machines \n\n\n\nScissors\, needles\, pins and thimbles allowed. No rulers\, no blade cutters. That is my approach. \nMargaret studied quilt-making with Grace Earl\, designer at the Chicago Art Institute\, and her prize-winning quilts have been exhibited in Northern California\, and at New Pieces Gallery in Berkeley. Each piece is machine pieced and hand quilted. Most have their origin in traditional design but develop organically\, influenced very much by the personality of the recipient. She starts and finishes a queen-size quilt in six to twelve weeks\, working night and day. The process takes over her life until the last stitch is taken. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Jane Haworth: Fabric Collage – “What’s it all About!” \n\n\n\nIn this 45 minutes -1 hour combo slideshow and trunk show\, we learn more about the Fabric Collage trend\, who’s making fabric collage and how Jane makes her fabric collage quilts. We see various examples of Jane’s work over the years. How she has progressed from only making fish quilts\, working through various themes to sharing her newer collaged pieces. \nPart of the lecture will be “how-to” instructions if you are new to fabric collage. Jane will guide you through instructions for designing your own collage patterns\, using photos or other images and how to enlarge the design. Learn about color and fabric choices\, tools that are required and finally Jane’s relaxed technique that doesn’t require making pattern pieces \, fusible\nproducts but glue to hold the collage. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Marjan Kluepfel: Evolution of an Art Quilter and Fabric Dyer. \n\n\n\nIn this fast moving\, information packed lecture Marjan discusses her personal methods for finding inspiration and creating designs. Her sewing and quilting techniques will be included. The lecture focuses on her development and growth as a practicing artist. Spanning almost thirty years\, her works have included intensive use of fiber reactive dyes and textile paints\, and many innovative art techniques. All will be discussed and revealed in this lecture. For more information about Marjan’s work\, please see her website. \nAbout Marjan Kluepfel: \nMarjan Kluepfel was born in the Netherlands. She has lived in Florida\, Hawaii\, Australia and South Carolina. After working in academia for many years\, she is now a full-time studio artist in Davis\, CA. Marjan has been creating art quilts since 1990. Her work has been juried into many shows and she teaches her fabric art both nationally and internationally. SUMMARY:My Animal Quilts with Nancy Brown
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Nancy Brown: My Animal Quilts. \n\n\n\nNancy has been making applique quilts for over 30 years featuring a variety of animals from anteaters to zebras (with a lot of dogs and cats in between). Nancy also has made several people themed quilts mostly based on old family photos. This lecture is a retrospective of her quilts and the stories behind them (with an emphasis on the more recent quilts). She will also talk a little about her design process. \nAbout Nancy Brown: \nNancy started making quilts over 30 ago after her mother took a quilting class and taught her what she had learned. Nancy has always loved animals and found that by using applique she could create realistic animal portraits. She feels that animals are important parts of this world and should be celebrated and preserved. She has made many animal quilts but with the wide variety of subjects available she feels there are many more animal quilts waiting to be made. \nNancy also loves old family photographs and from time to time she has made quilts inspired by these photos as a way to celebrate family. \nNancy exhibits her quilts around the country and has been fortunate enough to win some awards at these shows. Her quilts are in several private collections. She also teaches hand applique classes with animal themes and lectures on her animal quilts. SUMMARY:Feedsacks with Dr Marian Ann J. Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Dr Marian Ann J. Montgomery: Feedsacks. \n\n\n\nWhat We Have Learned: Feed Sacks have been an integral part of American quilting since the late 19th century when frugal women bleached the white cotton sacks to use as quilt backings.  In the late 1930s feed came in sacks with beautiful prints on them.  This presentation will showcase beautiful quilts made from feed sack fabrics as well as the myriad items made from feed sacks along with the history of this commodity.  New research based on the largest collection of printed cotton sacks held in a public repository\, Dr. Montgomery will share what they have found as well as many of the beautiful treasures in the collection. \nAbout Marian Ann J. Montgomery\, Ph.D.: \nCurator of Clothing and Textiles at the Museum of Texas Tech University since 2014\, Marian Ann J. Montgomery\, Ph.D.\, cares for over 35\,000 objects\, the largest collection of this type of material at a University in the United States. She is a quilt historian having published through the American Quilt Study Group. Sought out as an entertaining and informative speaker\, Dr. Montgomery enjoys making history come alive through the objects. \nShe received the 2019 Bybee Scholar award for her work in promoting and preserving the art of quilting. Among others\, her publications include Cotton and Thrift: Feed Sacks and the Fabric of American Households\, Sumptuous Stitches and Tiny Treasures: Needlework and Needlework Tools in the Collection of the Museum of Texas Tech University\, and Miss America Fashion. Dr. Montgomery earned her Ph.D. in fashion and textile history/museum administration from New York University through studies in the Costume Institute and Textile Study Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Sarah Goer: Rules and Options of Planned Improv Piecing. \n\n\n\nSarah likes options… but she also likes a plan. In this lecture and trunk show\, Sarah will discuss how she uses her organized nature to develop rules for herself which drive her Planned Improv quilt design work. She will share work in a series and show how she iterates on a design. Sarah will explain how she develops a formula for her project. She will leave us with specific ideas of how to develop a set of rules to guide our improv piecing. \nAbout Sarah Goer: \nSarah Goer is an artist and educator. Based in San Jose\, California\, she learned to sew as a child and was drawn to the color and geometry of quilting after college. As a former middle school math teacher\, Sarah combines her eleven years of classroom experience with her nearly two decades of quilting experience to bring clear instruction to her quilt students. SUMMARY:Material Matrix with Sandra Bruce
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Sandra Bruce: Material Matrix. \n\n\n\nSandra Bruce brings us her “Material Matrix” lecture on May 21\, 2024. Her technique was inspired by painter Chuck Close. It involves using a gridded photograph and interpreting each 2-inch square into fabric\, using piecing to achieve the effect. She will present an overview of the evolution of Material Matrix and how it works\, along with her colorful visual journey that brought her to this technique. \nFor more information visit Sandra’s lecture page here. \nAbout Sandra Bruce: \nSandra Bruce was born in Richmond\, VA to deaf parents. Raised to believe she could do anything she put her mind to\, she was never discouraged from being an artist. Sandra started sewing at age 8 on her mother’s treadle sewing machine and she has not stopped since. She took her first official quilting class in 1990 and she has been forever hooked. \nSandra has been an illustrator and letterer for 35 years and started her quilting business in 2010. She feels that quilting on her long-arm\, named Dixie\, is doing what she’s done all those years but with a different tool. SUMMARY:Quilting Against the Odds with Jane Sassaman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Jane Sassaman: Quilting Against the Odds. \n\n\n\nThis visual lecture is about accomplishing your work in spite of obstacles – family life\, space limitations\, etc.  It is a pep talk and slide show which covers my inspirations and my obstacles.  I encourage people to do “what you have to do” by using myself and other artists as examples. \nAbout Jane: \nAfter a varied career in the design world\, Jane began to quilt in 1980.  She found that these “soft paintings” satisfied the draftsman\, the craftsman and the artist in her.  Consequently\, she is now a dedicated (some say “obsessed”) quilt artist and fabric designer. \nHer art quilts have been shown in many national and international exhibits\, including Quilt National 1989 through 2005 and Contemporary American Quilts\, the first major exhibit of American art quilts in England. Her quilt “Willow” was named as One of the One Hundred Best American Quilts of the Century. Jane is also the author of “The Quilted Garden”.  The book includes twenty years of her work and exercises for making nature-inspired quilts. \nJane’s love for historic decorative arts can be seen in all facets of her work\, but it is especially evident in the exuberant fabric she is currently designing for FreeSpirit. Her designs are oversized and colorful and have been coined as “William Morris on anti-depressants”. They are created for quilts\, wearables and home decorating. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Pati Fried: Modern Traditionalism. \n\n\n\nExplore the principles of modern quilt design and how a traditional quilter might use these to challenge their design skills. By looking at fundamental design elements individually\, it is easy to understand how to create original designs with a modern aesthetic. \nAbout Pati: \nPati studied graphic design in college\, but always found herself lingering in the textile department. After graduating and working in corporate marketing for several years\, she finally discovered quilting and was hooked. Mixing pattern\, color\, and texture was a perfect fit for her\, both as a quilter and a designer. \nThe clean lines and graphic images of modern design are a huge part of her happy place and she loves the free spirit of improvisational piecing. But the rich history and longstanding techniques of traditional quilting have always been close to her heart\, too. She is amazed that such a humble American art form could explode into the strong\, international quilting community we see today. \nSo\, to keep her sanity and stay true to herself\, she chooses to embrace it all – modern\, improvisational\, and traditional. All materials provided\, but bring your small sharp scissors.\nJoAnn Vail will show how to use UFO’s\, strips and scraps for you to design and make a fabric postcard. Originally from the UK\, she lived and worked in London for more than 20 years before moving to Tokyo\, Japan\, and then to San Francisco in 2014. She has taught and studied quilts in all three countries. She became President of the SF Quilters Guild in 2016\, serving for two years\, and co-chaired the committee behind the very successful “QUILT San Francisco” quilt show in March 2023.  \nAfter time at the Kent Institute of Art & Design (now “University for the Creative Arts” in the UK) Alex’s career took her into science\, not-for-profits\, and big-tech\, while she continued to create and teach classes in sewing\, embroidery\, knitting and crochet. In 2023 she launched her company “Lixie Makes It” and organized the QUILT2024 event happening in January 2024. She has used her extensive e-commerce experience to help artists increase their visibility online and to develop new and additional income streams related to their art. At the same time she continues to create and exhibit her quilts and teach craft workshops. SUMMARY:Century of Progress Quilt Contest\, a Depression Era Mystery with Pattie Klimek
DESCRIPTION:In 1933\, in the middle of the Great Depression\, Sears Roebuck launched a nationwide quilt contest. The winning quilts would hang at the Chicago Worlds Fair and the top prize was $1\,000. Over 27\,000 quilts were entered and were designed and made by the quilter. All except the top winner. How did this happen? And\, what happened to the winning quilt? Come see these beautiful quilts and learn how this fraud transpired. \nPattie Klimek is not a quilt historian but loves quilts from the 1920’s and 30’s. Based in San Francisco\, she is one of the few Traditional hand piecers and hand quilters in a sea of Art and Contemporary quilters located in the Bay Area. She found some like minded quilters amongst the Dorcas Hand Quilters of San Francisco.
