SUMMARY:Stories in Cloth with Deb Cashatt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Deb Cashatt : Stories in Cloth \n\n\n\nDescription: Stories in Cloth offers a look at how textile artist Deb Cashatt turns the experiences of everyday life into (mostly) improvisational quilts. Drawing from her travels\, architecture\, pop culture\, and sports\, Deb shares her process—from the first spark of an idea to the final stitch. She discusses how she photographs moments on the road\, collects visual motifs\, and collaborates with Photoshop to shape the imagery that becomes her signature “symbographic” style. \nFind out more about Deb on her website. \nAbout Deb Cashatt: \n\n\nDeb Cashatt is a full-time studio artist whose primary medium is the art quilt. During the Coronavirus shutdown\, she began creating pieced quilts based on wonky graphic symbols. The rectilinear Greek key—long one of her favorite patterns—became a key element in this work. As she combined Greek keys with other pieced blocks on her design wall\, recognizable objects began to emerge. Blending the words “graphic” and “symbol\,” she coined the term “symbographic.” These symbographs have become a visual language through which she tells stories in cloth.\nAlthough based in the Gold Country of Northern California\, Cashatt is an enthusiastic traveler. She jokes that she is fortunate to have friends who move to exotic places just so she can visit them. Memories from her travels\, along with objects from everyday life\, frequently appear in her artwork.\nIn addition to her solo practice\, Cashatt spent 20 years as one half of the fiber art duo Pixeladies. Both the Pixeladies’ work and her solo artwork have been published and juried into national and international exhibitions. You can see Deb’s work on her website. She posts  work in progress on Instagram.  Deb thinks the world would be a better place if people wore boas and drove colorful cars with fins. \nThis will be a hybrid meeting: in-person at St Anne’s and broadcast via Zoom\, link available on the Members Only Page.\nNonmembers may pay a $5 guest fee at the door or email contact@sfquiltersguild.org to purchase a non-member zoom link.
