SUMMARY:Modern Art Movement & Influence on Modern Quilting with Abigail Vargas
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Abigail Vargas : Modern Art Movement & Influence on Modern Quilting \n\n\n\nThis lecture traces the rich dialogue between 20th-century modern art movements and today’s modern quilting aesthetic. From the bold geometry of Bauhaus and the expressive abstraction of Abstract Expressionism to the minimalism and conceptual art of the 1960s and beyond\, Abigail Vargas explores how visual art history has shaped the language of contemporary quilts. We’ll examine how examples from Abigail’s designs adopt\, reinterpret\, and challenge the formal ideas of modernism—transforming canvas-based movements into stitched expressions of color\, shape\, and meaning. \nFind out more about Abigail on her website. \nAbout Abigail Vargas: \n\n\nAbigail Vargas is a contemporary/modern textile artist based in Winters\, California\, with ten years of quilting experience. Her work has been featured in national exhibitions such as QuiltCon\, Quilt National\, Craftform and Quilts=Art=Quilts. She is the creator of a collaborative quilt series called Exquisite Quilt where all six quilts had a special exhibit at the International Quilt Festival\, Houston in 2025. This year she became the SAQA Northern CA/NV Region Exhibition Committee Chair and has been a member of the Sacramento MGQ for 10 years.\nAbigail’s quilts blend repurposed and new fabrics that create bold\, colorful designs inspired by nature\, science\, and family history. In her Winters studio\, Abigail explores color\, fluid movement and emotion through textiles. Textured quilting lines\, printed patterns\, and the sculptural shadows of solid quilted fabrics all play a role in the dynamic surfaces of her work. \nThis will be a hybrid meeting: in-person at St Anne’s and broadcast via Zoom\, link available on the Members Only Page.\nNonmembers may pay a $5 guest fee at the door or email contact@sfquiltersguild.org to purchase a non-member zoom link.
